Tidy up of recycling center to continue

After a successful first stab at putting its collection facility into better order last weekend, Ajijic’s citzen-run Recycling Committee has scheduled a follow-up sort-and-tidy effort for Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Around 40 Mexican and expat volunteers showed up on April 6 to classify, bag and bundle heaps of discarded plastic, glass and cardboard items stored at the Centro de Acopio warehouse located on the highway at the western outskirts of Ajijic.  At the end of the day, the teamwork translated into 37 jumbo bags filled with plastic and 239 sacks of glass, all sorted by colors, plus around 200 tied packets of flattened cardboard, now ready for transport and sale to recycling outfits in Guadalajara.

The amount of remaining materials attests to the significant cooperation of local households and businesses that are now supporting the initiative to keep recyclable items out of the waste stream handled by the municipality’s regular garbage collection service.
