Former mayor withdraws labor suit

Former Chapala Mayor Javier Degollado has dropped the labor suit he lodged against the municipal government to collect unpaid wages and benefits accrued during his term as chief executive.

pg3cDegollado currently holds a seat on the cabildo (city council) after losing his bid for reelection last year. The current administration received notification of the lawsuit in February of this year. Degollado personally appeared before an arbitration commission September 2 to withdraw his claim, exactly four days after the case was brought to public attention at the council’s August 29 session.   Interviewed by reporters following the session, Degollado said that he was only suing for payment of his salary corresponding to the second two-week period of September 2018, amounting to around 14,000 pesos. However, according to City Hall’s head attorney Isaac Trejo Gracián, the total sum of the claim includes bonuses and other benefits that add up to around 120,000 pesos.

The former mayor’s case is one of more than 200 labor suits purportedly filed by top-tier officials and other government employees who were forced to relinquish their jobs with the change of government one year ago.
