Jalisco mayors from 21 municipalities trotted off to the nation’s capital this week to form a common front with federal legislators to push for robust funding that will permit economic growth and sustainable development for the Lake Chapala region.
The thrust of the agenda was reaction to budgetary policies of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has restructured government funding to favor populist social programs and in turn, steeply slice direct federal outlay to municipalities for public works and infrastructure.
Jalisco has been especially hurt by these strategies, and communities burdened with heavy debt and limited local revenue resources are feeling the pain.
