Freak crash causes extensive damage

A freak accident reported late December 25 in Ajijic left three parked vehicles piled in a heap and a utility pole severed at the base.

pg9aThe incident occurred at around 11 p.m., as several blocks of Calle Ocampo located west of the Rio Bravo intersection were pitched into darkness by a sudden power failure.

According to neighbors, the chain reaction collision was caused by the driver of a red truck who was spotted roaring off from the scene at high speed immediately after the incident. He apparently slammed into the rear end of a silver pickup parked at the curb that snapped the utility poll as it was pushed on top of a parked sedan, which hit third car in turn. The pickup became wedged between the sedan and the nearest house.

Local police arrived later to block off the street until a CFE crew appeared the next morning to make repairs and restore electrical service. So far authorities have not located the culprit.
