Chapala goes quiet as weekenders stay away

The normal weekend hustle and bustle at Chapala's waterfront Malecón came to a standstill as Guadalajara and local residents remained cloistered at home in adherence to Governor Enrique Alfaro's#QuedateEnCasacall for a five-day timeout.

Merchants in the tourist zones accepted the local government's recommendation to shutter their stalls as of Sunday at least until March 27.

The streets in downtown Chapala were like a ghost town and highway traffic through Ajijic was scarce throughout the day.
Chapala police are keeping watch on the Ajijic Malecón where local youth are reportedly continuing to gather for social interaction. A large wedding party held Saturday night at Chapala's charro arena, in violation of a City Hall mandate, was widely denounced on social media.
