Market reopens after makeover

Chapala’s Mercado Municipal is ready for prime time following the conclusion of a six-month renovation project.

pg11aOriginally built in the 1950s, the public market has not undergone a major overhaul in more than two decades.

Extensive improvements to the two-story building spanning the east side of the city’s central plaza were unveiled by government officials at a modest ceremony held Thursday, June 11.  Also in attendance were the 44 merchants who are scheduled to start moving back from temporary outdoor quarters over the weekend and the early part of next week.
