Ecology chief launches effort to save Ajijic’s landmark laurel

Chapala’s Ecology Department is undertaking radical treatment of the ancient tree standing at Ajijic’s Seis Esquinas intersection in hopes of keeping it alive.

pg1aRiddled with disease, the giant laurel is considered an emblem of the village by many inhabitants.

Ecology Director José Jaime Ibañez, a qualified expert on trees and their management, is in charge of the rescue mission that started Monday, June 22. He was on site for two successive days to supervise the pruning of several heavy branches that threaten to split off and further harm the tree or damage nearby properties or passersby.

The trimming was carried out by crewmen from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), who employed a large cherry picker truck (to reach the tall branches) and ground workers to safely control their fall.
