City of Chapala marks 50-year milestone

Tuesday, September 1, was a red letter day for Chapala, marking the 50th anniversary of its official designation as a city.

pg9aTo commemorate the occasion the government posted a video clip on its Facebook page showing quick flashes of local scenery captured through time, with a link to another nine-minute video recounting highlights of local history.

Chapala was originally settled by an indigenous tribe in the early 12th century, falling under rule of Spanish conquistadores four centuries later.  In 1824, the town acquired the title Villa de Chapala, with its first formal government established in 1846. It was raised to the category of a municipality in 1939.
