National Guard commander ditches plan for Chapala base

Lack of personnel was cited as the reason that the commander of the 14th Guardia National (GN) Battalion headquartered in Jocotepec has scrapped plans to assign a detachment of his forces to a sub-base in Chapala.

pg13aBelieving it had an agreement with GN Commander Pedro Enriquez Vázquez that some troops would be dispatched to a Chapala guard post, the local government had maintained its lease on the city’s former police station at Calle Niños Héroes 65, investing more than 200,000 pesos to renovate the facility since it was vacated in July.

Vázquez has now informed police chief Raúl Valenciano Saucedo that Chapala and other neighboring towns will be covered by a detachment operating in Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos charged with running routine patrols.

Lamenting the reversal of plans, Chapala Mayor Moisés Anaya announced that he expects to drop the 30,000 monthly rental contract on the Niños Héroes property when it expires next month.
