Chapala cops become the apple of kids’ eyes

The first time Chapala police officers distributed apples to local children on Three Kings Day was in 2014, an initiative the local media subsequently dubbed “Operation Apple.”

pg13aThat label has stuck and this year was the sixth time the event has taken place.

Given we are in the era of Covid-19, the organization of Operation Apple 2021 was different than in previous years.

The mayor’s office rightly insisted that additional precautions were required to ensure the safety of the children. A stipulation was made to purchase latex gloves and hand-sanitizer in order to comply with Covid protocols.

On the morning of January 6 (Three Kings Day), masked and gloved Chapala police officers Rafael Suarez Gonzalez and Jesus Estrada Torres, with a full box of apples in tow, headed off to the first distribution location – the Chapala Malecon.
