Chapala mural undergoes restoration

After years of neglect and gradual deterioration, the Chapala government is taking on the task of fully restoring the mural depicting episodes of local history that graces the retaining wall on Avenida Hidalgo, located steps away from the western end of the waterfront Malecón.

pg8The work of art, titled “La Ribera del Lago de Chapala,” was created in 2009 by prolific Ajijic portrait, landscape and mural artist Javier Zaragoza. Measuring 55 meters in length and 4.8 meters in height, it is composed of eight panels that portray local people and scenery during different epochs, from the pre-Hispanic era to the present day.

The restoration project was started on January 12 at the behest of Mayor Moisés Anaya, in coordination with the artist’s stepdaughter, Paola de Watterlot.
