Crisis inspires hope for San Pedro Itzicán

Poverty, poor nutrition, inadequate supplies of safe drinking water, chronic kidney disease and broken family structures are the principal quality-of-life issues faced by the inhabitants of San Pedro Izticán and other small villages located along the isolated fringes of Lake Chapala’s north shore.

pg1bRecent outbreaks of Covid-19 and dengue fever have only aggravated such unfortunate circumstances.

Yet members of various support groups that have emerged to assist the people in these underprivileged communities perceive a silver lining in the challenges of current hard times. Hardships have become an inspiration to achieve the groundwork for a self-sustaining community development project based on the concept of giving a hand-up rather than hand-outs to neighbors in need.

Patricia Moran, director of San Pedro´s FoodShare/Community Kitchen program, outlined the background and current status of humanitarian aid for the village and a promising vision of its future destiny.
