Damaged fountain under repair

Employees from Chapala’s Public Works Department are making headway to restore the stone fountain at the city’s main intersection that was damaged on March 11 when it was hit by a loaded cargo truck that had lost brake power while en route from Guadalajara to Ajijic.

Unable to safely make the turn-off onto the Libramiento bypass, the driver continued straight into downtown Chapala, honking the horn to alert vehicles and pedestrians in his path along Avenida Madero. As attempts to slow down by bumping into the median failed to stop  the truck, he intentionally collided with the fountain to finally bring it to a halt.

The work crew has managed to salvage some parts of the of broken stonework, but will use new pieces of carved cantera (stone) to complete the eight-meter gap.
