“The Hands of Truth,” a colorful representation of universal mystical symbols emblazoned on a backdrop of a Lake Chapala landscape, is the latest addition to Ajijic’s extraordinary trove of mural art.
The project now nearing completion at the west end of Calle Hidalgo is a collaboration of handiwork by Ajijic artist José Durán and the inspiration of resident expat Gary Mark Lesley.
Together they hope to foster a movement to turn the full span of Hidalgo, from the San Andrés Church to the Seis Esquinas intersection with Álvaro Obregón, into La Calle de los Murales, a four-block gallery of street art.
Durán is an experienced professional artist who has created a number of the town’s public murals, earning his daily bread from selling minia-ture paintings, craft jewelry and art calendars at the Callejón del Arte adjacent to the central plaza
