A decade on, four men convicted for attempted assassination of Chapala cops

The Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office has announced that four men charged with the 2011 attempted assassination of Chapala police officers have been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

The case stems from an incident reported on September 12, 2011, when the four suspects implicated in the crime, aided by other individuals, intercepted three municipal police patrols near the intersection of Avenida Hidalgo and Calle Aquilés Serdán in the heart of downtown Chapala.

The would-be assassins jumped out of their vehicles and opened fire on the police officers using various weapons, including semiautomatic rifles.  When the officers repelled the attack, the criminals pitched two fragmentation grenades in their direction, one of which detonated a long distance from the scene, while the other falling close to one of the patrols failed to activate.
