Jalisco state police are in the process of carrying out an investigation at a property in downtown Chapala to determine whether it has been used as a clandestine burial site.
The house at the corner of Calles Raúl Navarro and Juárez was secured by police during the last week of November.
At a December 9 press conference, Blanca Trujillo Cuevas, the Attorney General’s special prosecutor in missing persons cases, confirmed that small human bone fragments and clothing items have been found on the premises. However, she explained that no corpses have been discovered to date.
Signs of excavation, construction and wall markings allusive to La Santa Muerte (a folk religion popular among the most marginalized sectors of society) have reportedly been seen on the property. Some neighbors residing in the vicinity have indicated that before the house was sealed, they witnessed people going in and out at all hours, leading to suspicions that it was being used as an illicit drug distribution narcotiendita.
