Chapala Mayor Alejandro Aguirre has announced that the state government has given a green light for a major renovation of Avenida Madero, the municipal seat’s principal thoroughfare.
Aguirre broke the news on Wednesday, March 2, following a meeting with Jalisco cabinet chief Hugo Luna and state legislator Claudia Murgía, who helped negotiate a package of public works projects for Chapala’s current administration.
The main street upgrade will involve replacing the stone adoquín pavers with a surface of hydraulic concrete that will be more resistant to the wear and tear of a heavy traffic load. The project will also include sidewalk and curb improvements.
Aguirre did not spell out further details of what the work will entail, including the projected costs and timeline. And he did not delve into further infrastructure projects the state and local government have planned for other localities.
The announcement of the Avenida Madero makeover immediately sparked plenty of feedback on social networks, with some constituents applauding the project and others opposing the concept of concrete streets that do not allow filtration of rain water, and may likely contribute to global warming. Stay tuned for the possible spread of public controversy on the matter.
