Lake Chapala Society puts Foodbank in the spotlight

“Food poverty in Lakeside communities and what is being done to address it” will be the featured topic at the Open Circle meeting scheduled for Sunday, March 6, 10:30 a.m., at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).

pg12The presentation by Foodbank Lakeside (FBL) will bring to light issues of poverty and hunger that afflict people in lakeshore towns and villages, and explain how the all-volunteer organization has come to their aid since its inception nearly two years ago.

Emerging from the economic devastation provoked by the local outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Foodbank initiative is helping provide basic pantry goods, called despensas, to needy families in eight local communities. The program targets the elderly, young children and persons who suffer disabilities and chronic diseases.

FBL monthly expenses to give out 700 despensas add up to approximately 245,000 pesos. The sum of 370 pesos, roughly equivalent to $US18 or $CAD23, is enough to supply an average family of four for one month.
