Sexual misconduct allegations rock Chapala high school

A long-time professor at the Preparatoria Regional de Chapala has voluntarily taken leave from his teaching duties after allegations of sexual abuse against a female former student emerged this week.

pg1dThe presumed victim named Daniela went public on social media, accusing the teacher of accosting and raping her on different occasions in 2015 when she was 15 years old. It appears that she gained courage to denounce him after taking part in the local International Women’s Day march held Tuesday, March 8.

Her claims subsequently triggered current students to stage an on-campus protest Monday, March 14, which then heated up, spilling out to the school’s exterior gates and continuing on to the steps of City Hall.

At City Hall, Chapala Secretary General Lilia Alvarado Macías and government solicitor Gamaliel Soto Pérez escorted Daniela and members of her family inside for a consultation on the allegations and guidance on legal steps they may choose to pursue. Ana Margarita Martínez, regional representative of the Jalisco Human Rights Commission, was also present at the meeting. The officials pledged to maintain their support and follow through with legal advice as required.
