Chapala’s water-supply issues persist

Chapala residents have become frustrated in dealing with persistent breakdowns in the city’s water supply for the past several months.

pg1dThis week, the local government has given some explanations for the situation, attributed to the poor conditions of one of the wells operated by the  SIMAPA water agency.

The crux of the problem is that the well is more than 60 years old, and over that time the level of the underground water table has dropped due to increased demand and the effects of climate change. Scarcity is also aggravated by dry season conditions in the area’s natural water cycle.

The government’s solution is to dig a new well to boost pumping capacity by extracting water at less depth and with greater pressure than permitted by the old well. The project is expected to take approximately two months to complete.

Meanwhile, SIMAPA offers personalized home services for its deprived customers. They may call 376-765-3108 or 376-765-7612 to order free delivery by a pipa water tanker. The same numbers apply for requesting a service call by a SIMAPA technician who can assess any specific water system problems that exist within the user’s property.
