Ajijic runners head for the andes

Alejandro González (center), head of Ajijic’s Municipal Sports Council, joins local athletes Ricardo “Chicles” González (left) and Aurelio Márquez Rodríguez, who will head off to the Peruvian Andes next month to compete in the 30-kilometer leg of the 2022 Ultra Machu Picchu mountain race.

González, founder of Ajijic’s Chupinaya mountain race, is a seasoned runner who has previously raced in international events in Mexico, South America, Europe and the United States. At age 63, he will enter the veterans category in the April 10 Machu Picchu contest.  On the other hand, “Nano” Márquez, 25, will compete in the open category in his first foray abroad.
