Local churches have not yet confirmed the scheduling of this year’s Palm Sunday activities, including the religious processions reenacting Jesus Christ’s triumphal arrival in Jerusalem customarily held in Chapala, San Antonio Tlayacapan and Ajijic prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, Domingo de Ramos (Palm Snday) marks the start of Semana Santa (Holy Week) observances at Lakeside and throughout Mexico.
The one event that is definitely on the calendar is the Kermese por el Pueblo de Ajijic set for Sunday, April 10, at the town’s central plaza. It is a substitute for the traditional Verbena Jamaica del Pasado festival put on as a fundraiser for the Ajijic Passion Play.
This year proceeds from the old-fashioned village fair will be destined to provide financial support to local inhabitants battling diverse illnesses. Co-sponsored by the Pasión Cristo organization and an ad hoc committee of community activists, the event will start with breakfast service from 8 a.m., with the sale of an array of typical Mexican foods, drinks and desserts, musical entertainment and popular Mexican games concentrated between 4 and 10 p.m.
