Rabies vax campaign in Chapala after man dies from bat bite

Jalisco health authorities have put together an intensive rabies vaccination campaign for household pets in Chapala after a man died from the lethal virus transmitted by the bite of a bat.

pg1bThe 41-year-old victim, identified as a resident of El Salto, apparently was nipped in the hand by a bat during a visit to Chapala last January. However, his illness from rabies was not officially diagnosed by the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) and reported to the state Department of Health (SSJ), until April 14. His death occurred just four days later.

The Chapala municipal government has been actively publicizing the vax campaign on its Facebook site since April 16, providing pet owners with details on why and where their dogs and cats can receive the free shots. It is recommend that young canines and felines get vaccinated at one and three months of age, and once a year thereafter.
