Ajijic to host world debut of ‘Hallelujah’ musical

The debut performances of a one-man musical based on the Leonard Cohen classic “Hallelujah,” created and performed by Lakeside musician James Twyman, will take place in Ajijic at the end of May and start of June.

pg11aTwyman is no stranger to one-man musicals. In the past he’s performed “musical magic shows” based on the songs of Cat Stevens and James Taylor, but for “Hallelujah” he lays aside the props and lets the music stand on its own.

“I became obsessed with “Hallelujah” when I heard Jeff Buckley’s version in the mid 90’s,” Twyman says.  “The imagery and beauty overwhelmed me, so I added it to my own repertoire, singing it at nearly every concert I performed. It was only recently that I thought about turning it into an entire musical.”

When Cohen released Hallelujah on his 1984 “Various Positions” album, it was practically ignored. Fans recognized the depth and beauty of the song, but no one predicted it would be one of the most covered songs in history (over 8,700 times).
