Chapala tax discount time begins

Chapala government offices resumed their regular hours on Tuesday, January 2 following the holiday vacation period, with many local taxpayers hustling to cover 2024 fiscal responsibilities and take advantage of early bird discount rates.

The impuesto predial (property tax) may be paid in person at the Catastro Land Registry office and cashier windows in the City Hall lobby. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Alternatively, there are options to pay online with credit or debit cards, or generate receipts payable at OXXO stores or BBVA bank branches. Instructions, available in English, are posted on the chapala.gob.mex website. Click on the Pago en linea button, proceed to Property Debt Consultation and fill in boxes for the property’s zone, type (urbanized or rustic) and account number given on last year’s bill. Then select a method of payment.

A 15-percent discount is applied automatically for annual bills paid in full during January and February. Discounts drop to five percent in March and April.

The 50-percent discount offered to seniors, pensioners and the disabled only applies to 800,000 pesos of the property’s total tax value, ruling out advantages for most foreign householders.

Water and sewage service bills are payable to SIMAPA offices in the property’s corresponding locality, or through the simapa.gob.mx.

Cashiers at City Hall and Guadalupe Victoria 63 in Ajijic receive payments 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays
