Riberas sewage system project under scrutiny

The Chapala government is under fire following the exposé published January 23 on the front page of the Guadalajara daily Mural.

The article alleges that the municipality’s Simapa water and sewage service agency has been excavating in the federal buffer zone between the lake and dry land without authorization from the National Water Commission (Conagua).

pg1aFollowing up on the denouncement, Conagua authorities based in Jalisco stepped in on Tuesday this week, slapping a closure order on the chained entrance to the site located near the Riberas del Pilar shoreline.

Chapala Mayor Alejandro Aguirre and Simapa Director Antonio Monreal countered the claim, saying the excavation is part of a sewage system project being undertaken on property owned by the municipal government that does not incur into the federal zone, thus not requiring a Conagua permit.
