It’s back-to-school time! But for many children in San Pedro Itzicán and nearby villages, attending school remains a distant dream.
The primary barrier? Finances. Registering a child in primary school now costs between 200 and 250 pesos, plus a maintenance fee covering cleaning, toilet paper, and general upkeep—a standard requirement for public schools. Additionally, there are expenses for uniforms (one for school, one for sports), shoes, backpacks and school supplies like pens and pencils, totaling around 2,000 pesos per child.
For numerous single mothers and families in the San Pedro Itzicán area, finding stable work is challenging, often due to health issues, leaving them with no choice but to forego school for their children. Many struggle to provide adequate food, the main reason why Poco a Poco feeds over 160 children five days a week. Consequently, a significant portion of these children won’t receive a formal education, contributing to a cycle where more than 40 percent of the community do not complete primary school. Education is key to breaking this cycle. If you can support or sponsor a child, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 333-820-4927.
