Scientists from two of Mexico’s leading universities are calling for the urgent creation of a “Green Agenda” to improve water and environmental management for Lake Chapala and the Lerma-Chapala-Santiago watershed.
Their call comes as plans advance to divert more water from the Solís Dam on the Lerma River to León in Guanajuato, as well as to construct a new pipeline from Lake Chapala to the Guadalajara metropolitan area—both measures that opponents argue threaten the lake’s water reserves.
The agenda, proposed by experts from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), envisions participation from all sectors of society, including citizens, academia, and government authorities.
