El Hospitalito, the former Catholic chapel at the heart of San Juan Cosalá, was officially reopened as a cultural center on Saturday, October 5, following a restoration project that began in 2016.
The conversion of the historic temple into a cultural center has sparked controversy among some villagers, who are unhappy with the exclusion of traditional religious services from the new cultural agenda. A small demonstration took place before the ceremony, with protesters calling for the reinstatement of traditional services held on the 12th day of each month as promised when the restoration work got started. Priests from the San Juan parish are now locked out of the premises.
