Ajijic’s month-long devotions to Nuestra Señora del Rosario will come to a close on Friday, October 31, with a grand village celebration.
This tradition stems from the popular belief that the Virgin Mary is the town’s spiritual founder, introduced by Franciscan missionaries who settled in the area around 1530—long before Saint Andrew the Apostle was designated as the local patron saint.
While the liturgical calendar marks October 7 as the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary, the faithful of Ajijic traditionally honor her throughout the entire month. Each day begins just before dawn with candlelight processions leading to the 6 a.m. prayer service at the San Andrés parish, where the antique image of the Virgin temporarily resides during October.
