Chess players face off at Ajijic tournament

Clever thinkers will gather on the grounds of the Lake Chapala Society on Sunday, November 16, to compete in the 7th annual Maestros del Lago Chess Tournament, organized by the Club Huarachess de Ajedrez.

pg9aAround 150 chess players are expected to participate in four categories:

Infantil – for children ages 10 and under

Juvenil – for youth ages 11 to 16

Aficionados – for players rated below 1,600 points

Libre – open to competitors of any age or rating

The tournament will follow the Swiss system, with eliminatory rounds beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing hourly through the final playoff at 5 p.m. Cash awards totaling 30,000 pesos, along with trophies and other prizes, will be distributed among the top players at the end of the day. Family members and other spectators are welcome to watch the games from the sidelines.

The registration deadline is Tuesday, November 11, at 6 p.m., via the online form at bit.ly/registrohuarachess. Proof of payment—by deposit or bank transfer to the account of Roberto Lorenzo Serrano Ávila (Banco Santander, account 5579 0890 0661 1209, CLABE 014346655082667980)—must accompany registration. The entry fee is 250 pesos for junior players and 350 pesos for the Libre and Aficionados divisions.

Club Huarachess promotes chess among lakeside residents of all ages and nationalities. The club hosts sessions open to all every Sunday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the north side of the Ajijic plaza.
