Four years from now, the town of Jocotepec will turn 500 years old. To begin the countdown to that historic milestone, the current municipal government is hosting the Primera Feria de la Fundación, scheduled Friday through Sunday, November 21-23.
According to local historians, the indigenous settlement, first populated by 12 families of the Coca tribe, was founded on November 20, 1529, not long after Spanish conquistadores arrived in the territory. Hernán Cortés granted explorer Captain Alonso de Ávalos ownership of the pueblo through a title issued by the Royal Notary, giving it the name San Francisco Xolotepec in acknowledgment of the Franciscan missionaries who were the first to evangelize the community.

Next weekend’s Foundation Fair, organized under the slogan “Jocotepec Vive,” will encompass a wide spectrum of cultural, artistic, culinary, social and commercial activities designed to strengthen civic pride and community identity among all residents of the municipality.
