Mayan museums in the works

Yucatan’s two Mayan cultural projects should be completed later this year. Together, they will cost the government more than one billion pesos.

The 236,000 square foot World of Maya Museum in Merida will open with—in addition to its regular exhibits—an exposition about the Chicxulub impact crater and the extinction of the dinosaurs. Meanwhile, the Mayan Civilization Palace, located some 60 miles southeast of Merida near the famed ruins of Chichen Itza, will also have a museum, but will promote Mayan culture further by reviving rituals and serving a projected 800 visitors per day, drawn mostly from those visiting the nearby ruins.
