Green Party seeks to raise drinking age

If the pro-environment Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) has its way, Mexicans under the age of 21 will no longer be able to buy alcohol or tobacco legally.

The PVEM wants Mexico to emulate the United States in raising the minimum drinking age from 18 to 21, citing the fact that 23 percent of road accidents involving drunk drivers are caused by youths aged 15 to 24. The PVEM also believes no one under 21 should be able to buy tobacco, which is responsible for 53,000 deaths a year in Mexico.

The federal Chamber of Deputies is currently analyzing the proposed reforms to the General Health Law.
