Mexican literary giant passes at age 83

Mexican literary great Carlos Fuentes died in a Mexico City hospital Tuesday, May 15.

Fuentes, 83, was being treated for heart problems before his passing. President Felipe Calderon broke the news on Twitter: “I deeply lament the death of our beloved and admired Carlos Fuentes, a universal Mexican writer.”

One of the most celebrated writers in the Spanish-speaking world, Fuentes was best known for his works “The Death of Artemio Cruz,” “Aura,” “The Old Gringo” and “Christopher Unborn.” Controversially, he was never awarded a Nobel literary prize.

Fuentes was born in Panama City on November 11, 1928 to Mexican parents. He lived much of his early childhood abroad, returning to Mexico as an adolescent after spells in Uruguay, Brazil, the United States, Chile and Argentina. He later divided his time between homes in Mexico City and London, where he did most of his writing.
