Four generals behind bars

A federal judge jailed four generals and two Mexican Army officers without bail on Monday, ahead of their trial for aiding a major drug gang.

The defendants are accused of passing on sensitive information to the now-defunct Beltran Leyva cartel from 2007 onwards and helping land planes laden with cocaine in Cancun and Mexico City. Arrested in May and formally charged on August 1, these are the highest-ranking Mexican military officials to be imprisoned in years.
