The day when the nation comes together

Mexicans will be out in large numbers from early afternoon on Saturday, September 15 to celebrate their national day, waving flags, wearing giant sombreros, blowing horns, eating traditional foods and reveling in the unique, festive atmosphere.

The biggest celebration in these parts is in the downtown Guadalajara area, where Jalisco Governor Emilio Gonzalez will deliver the final ‘grito’ of his administration from the balcony of the Government Palace at 11 p.m.  A lively fireworks display follows.

Mexico whoops it up

The sudden appearance of street vendors hawking flags, banners and colorful trinkets and a proliferation of red, white and green decorations in public places are visible signs of the rising spirit of patriotism and national pride that envelops all of Mexico during the month of September.

The celebrations culminate on Saturday, September 15 with the “Grito,” a reenactment of the call-to-arms by Mexico’s “greatest patriot,” Father Miguel Hidalgo.

There is no exact record of the rousing speech that set off a nationwide revolt against Mexico’s Spanish rulers, but the spirit is captured in modern day orations that will climax with a litany glorifying national heroes and howling cheers of “Viva Mexico!” at 11 p.m. on Saturday.

Grito celebrations  throughout the country will be officiated by mayors in small towns and municipalities and by governors in the capital cities of every state. Outgoing President Felipe Calderon will deliver the Grito in Mexico City’s Zocalo for the last time.

On Sunday, September 16 – Independence Day itself – parades will be held across the nation. Guadalajara’s parade sets off from the Agua Azul Park around 10 a.m. and files down Av. 16 de Septiembre to La Normal traffic circle. Taking part will be representatives from military, government and civil organizations.  Lake Chapala area towns, including Ajijic and Chapala, hold their own parades.

As Independence Day falls this year on a Sunday, education authorities have determined that schools will close on Monday, September 17.  Government offices and banks,  by law, should remain  open.
