Turn in suspected forged bills

What should you do if you think you might be in possession of a false peso bill?

The answer is to head to the nearest bank and ask the cashier to check the authenticity of the bill.  If there is any doubt, the cashier will retain the bill and give you a receipt that contains the information on the bank note, as well as your personal details.

The bill will then be sent to the Banco de Mexico (Mexico’s central bank) for further analysis. The bank branch should be able to confirm the authenticity of the bill after five days.

The most commonly forged bank note on Mexico is the 50-peso bill, followed by the 1,000-peso and 200-peso notes.

Recent changes to the federal penal code raised the maximum sentence for bank note forgery to 12 years in prison.
