Avoid the beach at Easter

Those new to Mexico who don’t head to the beach and stay in the cities will notice how the pace of life in Easter Week (Semana Santa) drops as businesses shut up shop and traffic diminishes.

For those in Guadalajara, it’s a good time for walking and taking in the fresher air.

The beach is another story. Resorts are packed to the brim with revelers determined to have fun. On some beaches – Manzanillo to name one key offender – you can hardly see the sand for the makeshift tents erected by holiday makers.

Anyone driving on Mexican highways during Easter Week should note that this is the most dangerous time of the year when the highest number of fatal accidents occur. Be especially warned that the Easter season seems to bring out hordes of irresponsible drivers who, in their haste to arrive at their destinations, place everyone at risk by attempting to overtake in the most dangerous situations.

Anyone heading for the coast should allow plenty of extra time for their journeys.
