Mexico’s senior population growing fast

Mexico marked World Population Day (July 11) with an update from the National Statistics Institute (INEGI) on the number of people currently living within its borders.

The current population of Mexico, according to INEGI, is 123.5 million.

Women account for 51.2 percent of the population, and men 48.8 percent.

Of the total, more than half – 65.2 million – are aged under 29.

Around one-quarter – 33.3 million – are under 15.

INEGI’s data also shows how Mexico’s population is aging. The number of people aged above 60 increased from 6.4 percent in 1990 to 10.5 percent in 2017.   INEGI says the figure is expected to increase to 32.4 million – 21.5 percent of the total population – by 2050.

According to the National Population Council (CONAPO), average life expectancy in Mexico in 2017 will be 75.3 years – 72.88 for men and 77.93 for women.

CONAPO puts the current population of the state of Jalisco at 8,110,943, an increase of 1.1 percent (88,000 people) in the last 12 months. There are approximately 96 men for every 100 women in the state.

The United Nations’ World Population Day was first marked on July 11, 1990 in more than 90 countries, and seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.

Since then, more than two and a half billion people have been added to the world’s population.

The Earth’s population is currently 7.5 billion, with 150 people being added every minute.

According to the “World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision,” published recently by the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs, we add 83 million people annually. By 2030, Earth’s population will be 8.6 billion. Then, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100.
