Homcide numbers spiked in 2016

Mexico registered 23,953 homicides for last year, the fourth highest number registered in the country’s history, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

This grim statistic represents a spike after a dip in homicides from 2013 to 2015.  The states with the highest rates of homicide for 2016 were, in order, CDMX, Guerrero, Chihuahua, Michoacán and Jalisco. Of the total, 89 percent were men.
