‘Feminist Commando’ responsible for attack on ecclesiastical HQ

At 1:50 a.m. Tuesday, a bomb fashioned out of a fire extinguisher, gunpowder, adhesive tape and a wick exploded in a meeting chamber at the headquarters of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, the official leadership body of the Catholic Church in Mexico.

The group claiming responsibility for the Mexico City bombing, in which no one was harmed, is the Comando Feminista Informal de Accion Autoautoritaria Coatitlue, a guerrilla organization which also boasts of similar attacks around Mexico City, including the Instituto de Mujeres and an Exxon facility.

In a message posted on their website, the organization stated that the attack was in large part an act of reprisal for sexual abuse of minors by priests and other church functionaries.

Priests have been not-uncommon targets of violence in recent years throughout Mexico.   Since 2013, 18 homicides have been reported.  Many of these murders are presumed to be executions perpetrated by criminal organizations the victims were known to openly criticize or work against.  However, the precise motivations for all the crimes is far from certain.
