Airlines to cough up for delays

New federal aviation laws obliging Mexican and foreign airlines to offer financial compensation to passengers in the event of delays longer than two hours will be implemented on October 31.

The airlines will then have 90 days to “adjust their systems and procedures” to reflect the new regulation, the National Air Transportation Chamber told its members this week.

Under the laws, airlines will be obliged to reimburse passengers no less than 7.5 percent of the ticket cost for delays of between two and four hours.  Delays of more than four hours will result in airlines having to fork out 25 percent of the price of the ticket.
