New tourist tax looms in Quintana Roo

International tourists flying into the state of Quintana Roo as of December will have an extra $US20 added to the cost of their airfares.

The state is set to launch a pilot program to generate funds to contribute to the development of “infrastructure, security and social development” in tourist areas, which include Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Money generated will be administered by an fideicomiso (trust fund) comprised of federal, state and municipal representatives.

The initiative, which was first proposed by the Consejo Nacional Empresarial Turístico (National Tourism Business Council), may be replicated throughout Mexico if it is deemed successful in Quintana Roo.
