Groundhog Day movie revisited: Mexico won’t pay for border wall, foreign minister reiterates

“We repeat what we have said many times: Mexico will not pay, under any circumstance, for a wall in U.S. territory along the border.

This determination is not part of Mexico’s negotiating strategy, but a principle of sovereignty and national dignity.”

That was the reply of Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray to tweets by U.S. President Donald Trump Thursday.

Tweeted Trump: The Wall will be paid for, directly or indirectly, or through longer term reimbursement, by Mexico, which has a ridiculous $71 billion dollar trade surplus with the U.S. The $20 billion dollar Wall is “peanuts” compared to what Mexico makes from the U.S. NAFTA is a bad joke!”

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump said: “We make a good deal on NAFTA, and, say, ‘I’m going to take a small percentage of that money and it’s going toward the wall.’ Guess what? Mexico’s paying.”
