Electoral Institute’s ‘quick count’ will point to presidential voting trends

Mexico will not have to wait long to get an indication of how the nation votes on Sunday.

pg1bpg1cThe National Electoral Institute (INE) will release the results of its Conteo Rapido (Quick Count) for the presidential election at 11 p.m. on Sunday, July 1 – three hours after the country’s 157,000 polling booths have closed.

Similar to an exit poll, the Conteo Rapido will be a sample of voting tendencies taken from 7,200 polling places nationwide. The results will be withheld if the margin of error is deemed too small.

Meanwhile, the Programa de Resultados Electorales Preliminares (PREP) publishes results from counted ballots from individual polling places in the presidential and two federal elections (Senate and Chamber of Deputies). The PREP will operate from 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 1 through 8 p.m. on Monday, July 2.

The PREP will be updated in real time on the INE website, as well as 25 authorized media sites.  INE reckons that 12 percent of the votes will be collated and published on PREP by midnight – four hours after polling ends – on the night of the election. By 3 a.m. on Monday, July 2, it is estimated that 55 percent of the votes will be published, and 82 percent by 8 a.m.

Depending on the margin of victory and the possibility of legal intervention, the final results should be known by Wednesday, and the winner officially announced the following Sunday.

State electoral agencies will provide results of local elections. In Jalisco, this task falls to Instituto Electoral y de Participación Ciudadana de Jalisco (IEPC), which will publish real-time updates of counted ballots on its website. iepcjalisco.org.mx.
