Campaigns shutdown for 3 days prior to vote

Citizens are getting a three-day respite from the incessant campaigning in the run-up to Sunday’s presidential elections.

Under Mexican law, all political parties and individuals are not permitted to participate in any kind of electioneering during this period.  This includes all public gatherings,  advertising and door-to-door campaigning, as well as social media postings.

The “veda” (shutdown), as it is known in Spanish, commences at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, June 28 and runs through to the moment polls close on the evening of Sunday, July 1.

Newspapers, broadcasters and other media outlets are also prohibited from publishing the results of polls during this period.
