Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has congratulated himself and his government for “stemming the flow” of migrants through Mexico
Earlier this year, he deployed the newly created National Guard security force to contain the stream of Central Americans passing through Mexico to the U.S. border, following threats by U.S. President Donald Trump that he would slap Mexican exports with tariffs if the situation did not improve.
The measures have brought “good results,” Lopez Obrador said at his regular press conference Thursday, noting that the policy averted a “confrontation” with the United States.
Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the number of apprehensions of migrants entering the United States illegally dropped from a high of 144,000 in May to 42,710 in November. Meanwhile, the number of deportations of Central Americans from Mexico rose exponentially.
