Tourism sector slams president’s plan to scrap ‘puentes’

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has been criticized for announcing that as of 2021 all civic holidays will be celebrated on their actual day, not on the nearest Monday.

Moving certain holidays to the nearest Monday was decreed by President Vicente Fox in 2006 and welcomed by the tourism sector, which has gained substantially from the extra income created by the long weekends – usually referred to in Mexico as “puentes” – over the past 13 years.
