Jalisco business owners contemplate firings as national leaders call for more stimulus money

A study carried out by Mexico’s National Statistics Institute (Inegi) suggests that 18 percent of businesses in Jalisco have already laid off employees during the current health contingency, and a further 24 percent are considering the same measure.

The survey incorporated 1,992 businesses in the state, of which the vast majority are struggling to cover their employees’ salaries, said INEGI Director  Augusto Valencia.

Almost one-third of business owners, many of them micro empresas with less than ten employees, said they were considering closing down their operations because of plummeting sales.

In total, 42.5 percent of the businesses questioned in the survey said they only had enough funds to survive one more month of lockdown without having to close and lay off their staff.  The order for all non-essential businesses to remain shuttered will be in place until May 30.
